Gee's Bend is located on the Alabama River in Alabama. It is easily accessible by ferry from Camden or by County Road 29 from Alberta. In the early 1800s, a family of cotton planters settled the area. After the Civil War, the slaves remained on the plantation as sharecroppers. However, the cotton prices began to fall and the community was facing ruin. In response, the Federal Government purchased the land and provided loans for the people of Gee's Bend.

Gee's Bend is home to a Quilters Collective. You can learn the craft of quilting and purchase a quilt made by local artists. They also live in wood frame houses. The Gee's Bend Quilt Trail includes two versions of the famous "Housetop" pattern. There are also 10 murals located near the original quilters' houses.

Gee's Bend has also become an important patchwork quilting community. These quilts have been called "miraculous works of modern art." This is an important chapter of American art history, and their quilts are part of the permanent collections of twenty leading art museums.
