East Syracuse is an incorporated village and a suburb of the City of Syracuse. It is in eastern Onondaga County. Its population was 3,084 at the 2010 census. East Syracuse is adjacent to DeWitt, a town in Onondaga County. The city's population is spread out across several communities.
The city's center is one mile east of the Syracuse Amtrak Station and two miles northeast of Le Moyne College. Several hotels can be found in and around East Syracuse. The median home value in the city is $217,400. However, home prices are lower in the city's outer neighborhoods.
When building the community, residents should consider the history and culture of the city. The city was inhabited by Onondaga clans who lived along the eastern boundary of their territory. A trail connected the village to the Ley Creek, which allowed Onondagas to travel by canoe to the capital. In the 1930s, portions of the Onondaga village were uncovered. This was when the East Syracuse High School was being built.
In addition to the public schools, East Syracuse is home to several businesses. Major retail chains, manufacturing companies, and international companies all have operations in East Syracuse. The city also is home to the internationally recognized Bristol Myers-Squibb Company. In 1996, Jason M. Rhoades was a college student who worked for NYNEX as a management intern. When he was elected as a village trustee, he became the youngest elected official in New York State. By 2001, he became the mayor of the town. Learn More
