East Boston

For much of the twentieth century, Italian immigrants dominated the population of East Boston. However, the residents of this neighborhood faced discrimination and few opportunities for upward mobility. As a result, they clustered together in Italian-dominated neighborhoods. Despite this, they played an important role in shaping the neighborhood's history.

The area also had its share of notable individuals. Among them was Isabel Hyams, who helped escaped slaves and became the first female nurse of the Union during the Civil War. Her work continued for 22 years after the war. She supported social service projects in East Boston and founded Fresh Air Camps. In addition, she helped to create the Penny Lunch Club in 1888.
